What is hantavirus?
The hantavirus was discovered in 1993. It is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be passed from animals to humans. This is a respiratory illness caused by breathing in the dust of feces from infected deer mice. While there are only roughly 12 cases per year in Pennsylvania and Ohio combined, the mortality rate is 38%, which puts it in the neighborhood of septicemic plague. (See this link)
What is the proper procedure for the removal of droppings?

Using a broad-spectrum disinfectant that is EPA approved specifically for the hantavirus, you should thoroughly wet down the affected area/materials.

Remove all droppings using a HEPA vacuum. HEPA filters remove 99.97% of all particulates equal or greater than 0.3 microns. Please note that adding a HEPA
filter to a shop vac is not adequate to prevent particulates from entering the air through the exhaust system. This will put you at risk of aspirating the particles
and getting sick. -
Disinfect the entire area using electrostatic sprayers and a fogging system to ensure total and even coverage of the affected materials.

Wipe down and disinfect all hard surfaces which were affected with feces, sebum, and urine.

Porous materials may need to be discarded (like fabrics or insulation).
Anyone working with rodent, pigeon or pest dropping cleanup should wear an N95 mask at a minimum to catch the airborne particles. Steri-Clean Cleveland recommends a respirator with an organic vapor cartridge. Donning gloves and a TYVEK suit will help to keep your clothing and skin clean.
